What's different about a DC metro wedding?

Photographing a DC metro wedding

Four real seasons

DC has four real seasons, and winter is one of them. Winter light goes early, so a late-afternoon ceremony ends in the dark. Summer evenings stay light much longer. Spring runs March to May and fall runs October to November, and both fill early. Cherry blossom season brings the prettiest light and the biggest crowds of the year. Summer is hot and humid, with fast storms. In the mountains the weather flips fast, and fog can roll over a ridge in minutes.

Venues across the District, Maryland and Virginia

Our photographers have worked The Mansion at Strathmore in North Bethesda and Historic Rosemont Manor in Virginia. Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles is on our list, along with The Crossvines and Springfield Manor in Maryland. Sweeney Barn is a favorite for rustic weddings. Skyland Lodge sits on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, a long drive with a huge view. DoubleTree by Hilton Gaithersburg rounds it out. Toast's DC work also includes the InterContinental The Willard, the Grand Hyatt Washington, President Lincoln's Cottage and District Winery.

The Beltway problem

The Capital Beltway decides your timeline. A Georgetown hotel to a Loudoun County venue on a Friday afternoon can take well over an hour. Crossing the Potomac at rush hour is slower still. Downtown venues mean garages and loading-zone rules. We cover Washington, Arlington, Alexandria, Bethesda, Silver Spring and Middleburg. Travel within 30 miles of DC is free.

Engagement sessions in DC

The Tidal Basin during cherry blossom season is worth an early alarm. The National Mall and the memorials are popular for portraits; check the park's permit requirements. Georgetown's waterfront and brick side streets work year round. Old Town Alexandria has cobblestones and the river. The U.S. National Arboretum has the old Capitol columns in a meadow.
