The decision of where to go for your honeymoon is possibly one of the hardest choices involved with wedding planning. You know you want your first trip as a married couple to be an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience, but there are plenty of destinations that promise that. How do you pick the one that is perfect for you?

Well, it depends on what you’re looking for. We’ve gathered a few of our favorite suggestions so you can find your honeymoon style and get some inspiration in your search for that perfect spot.

For a Road Trip: Australia

With its long stretches of coastal scenery, exciting cities, and stunning nature, Australia was meant for road trips. The country is huge, and while a large part of the landmass is dedicated to the impenetrable Outback, there are plenty of roads to explore. Australia’s best road trips include unmissable drives such as the Great Ocean Road and Great Alpine Road, but you can also take some great detours into wine valleys, national parks, and even the Outback itself.

Most travelers road tripping in Australia rent a car, but if you’re going to do a longer trip (such as the epic Big Lap around the whole country) you could also consider buying a car second-hand. This can turn out cheaper than renting, especially if can sell it back at the end of your trip. Check online on sites like Gumtree to find a used car in Australia that fits your need.

For a Budget Honeymoon: Thailand

If you’re lusting after tropical island scenery but don’t have the budget to blow on a big Caribbean getaway, Southeast Asia — and Thailand in particular — is a great choice. The region has some of the world’s most beautiful islands and beaches, plus incredible temples, delicious food, and, most importantly, low prices. After all, this is backpacker country.

But no hostels or cheap sleazy club nights for you. Head for quiet, unspoiled islands like Koh Lanta or Koh Kradan for an idyllic, laid-back, romantic vibe. If you do want to enjoy some of that legendary Thai nightlife, look for deals on upscale resorts in more popular spots like Phuket and Koh Samui so you can get the best of both worlds.

Remember to avoid the rainy season in the summer if you are looking for a blue-sky beach getaway. According to Travel and Leisure, the best time to visit is between November and April.

For Luxury: St Lucia

If you’re lucky enough to have the budget for a luxury honeymoon destination, you can’t do better than the little Caribbean island of St. Lucia. This is a perennial honeymoon favorite, thanks to its truly jaw-dropping natural beauty and its collection of remote high-end resorts.

The best hotels in St. Lucia include spectacular views of the islands’ distinctive Pitons mountains and clear blue waters from beautifully romantic rooms. You will find everything from treehouse fantasy chic to sleek, modern designs and even open-air rooms with private pools overlooking the green hills. If you can drag yourself away from your little slice of luxury paradise, there are plenty of exciting things to do on the island, from experiencing authentic Creole culture to zip-lining through the rainforest.

For Wilderness: Scotland

The highlands and islands of Scotland may not promise much in the way of sunny beaches or luxury resorts, but there is no place in the world better for pure wilderness. Even under drizzly skies, the scenery is stunning, blending dramatic hills, rugged coastlines, and legendary lochs.

You can legally camp for free anywhere in the Scottish countryside, making this an ideal destination for those who love sleeping under the stars. Of course, you could also retreat into a luxury honeymoon suite at the end of a long day of exploring.

Whatever it is you’re looking for for your honeymoon, there is a place in the world perfect for you. Within each of the types of trip outlined above, there are hundreds of possible destinations, all capable of being an incredible honeymoon destination. Do your research and go with your gut — in the end, you’re likely to fall in love with anywhere you choose.
