How to Get a Marriage License in Travis County

Lets correct a couple of common misconceptions.

  1. You can get your license in any county in Texas, and use it in any county in Texas. There is no need to get the license from the county in which the ceremony is taking place.
  2. Not all counties require witnesses’s signatures. Keep this in mind if you are interested in this photo opportunity with your maid of honor and best man signing your license!

In Texas, you can get your licence up to 89 days in advance, but no later than 3 days before the wedding. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Go to the county clerk’s office and apply for the marriage license.
  2. Provide a valid government issued picture ID
  3. Pay the fee, which is usually around $75

After the ceremony, be sure that your officiant signs the license, and records the date and county in which the ceremony took place. The officiant must be the one to return it to the County Clerk’s Office from which it was issued. The County Clerk’s Office will then return the original marriage license to you via USPS. Be sure to get at least 10 certified copies. Most government offices, banks, insurance companies, etc.. will want a copy.

Tips form our favorite officiant: Spike Gillespie

  1. Provide a microphone if your guest count is over 80. Some of our DJ packages include this, but we only charge $50 to add this onto any other DJ package.
  2. Don’t position your officiant between the bride and groom for a photo after the ceremony. Your officiant has just brought the two of you together, and won’t want to divide you in the picture. Make sure you add this to the notes for your photographer.
  3. Do everything you can start your ceremony on time! Your officiant will likely arrive 30 minutes before the ceremony, and leave 10 minutes after it concludes.
